Decency Standards
Recently Bono of U2, Howard Stern, and (of course) Janet Jackson have gotten the FCC in a tizzy over the violation of their (hard to pin down) standards. Stern has been fined and has had difficulty staying on the air.
Enter Sean Hannity.
on his radio show, Sean Hannity played the graphic audio of the be-heading of Nick Berg. you think the FCC will go after GOP lock-stepper on this one? likely not. i find it amazing that Bono can use the F-word and Stern can use potty humor and those somehow eclipse the actual sound of a murder taking place. maybe if stern fawned over Bush he'd be in better shape.

In Portland, OR, the morning crew from 105.1 FM was fired for repeatedly playing and laughing at the recording of the beheading. According to Peter Ames Carlin, in the Saturday, May 15, 2004, Oregonian:
"Over the edge: Speaking of departed morning radio hosts, KNRK (94.7 FM) has fired its morning drive hosts, Marconi and Tiny, along with show producer Nik J. Miles, who appeared on the show as Nickie J.
The decision came down Thursday, a day after Marconi and friends had played an audiotape of the beheading of Nick Berg (his dying screams, in other words) while making wisecracks.
'It was such an insensitive, inappropriate, repulsive bit, and so clearly beyond any boundary of good taste it caused us to take the action we did,' said Clark Ryan, an executive of Entercom, which owns the station.
The bit has also become a national news story, making CNN just in time for Berg's memorial service on Friday.
Marconi, whose show has long been notorious for its graphic talk about sex and other edgy subjects, released a statement on his Web site that both apologized to listeners and explained that recent world events had traumatized him past the point of ordinary sensitivity.
"I sometimes forget there are people who still feel," he wrote.
KNRK's Marconi-free morning show will focus on music for the next few weeks. Station managers will launch a new show sometime in the future."
How do you forget that there are feeling people left in the world? is my question of the day.

it's all very sad and pathetic.
