Jackson Free Press | Abortion 'Ban' DOA—But Coming Back to Life?

Damn I love Steve Holland (D, Plantersville). As you may know he authored a bill banning abortion in MS. basically, he claimed to be tired of watching Republicans try to peck away at abortion with new restrictions and decided to steal their thunder. He'd gut their bill and change it to ban abortion outright. they could either vote for a bill that NO GOP'er had anything to do with creating or passing, OR they could vote against it. some found it upsetting, but the bill's language is moot lest the Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade...and even then the GOP couldn't take any credit. well, the GOP'ers aren't happy about this. I mean, this is THEIR little pet drum to beat. Now that I caught you up to date, read what the Jackson Free Press reported about the last few moments before the bill's deadline.

In the hour leading up to the bill deadline, Holland—accompanied by Rep. Bobby Moak, D-Bogue Chitto, and a reporter and an intern from the Jackson Free Press—went to dinner at C.S.’ Deli. There he fed on fried chicken and pork chops, telling stories about his career as an undertaker, and killing time he might have spent in conference negotiating and arguing with Republicans over the bill’s language.

By the time Holland paid his check and returned to the Capitol and leisurely presented his most recent version of the bill to Senate conferees, House and Senate health committee members had only 12 minutes left to reach a consensus on the conference report before sending it out to the House and Senate for approval. Minutes after conferees started reading through the report, Holland said, “You’ve got five minutes to sign your signatures.”

Senate Public Health Committee Chairman Nunnelee said he had not seen the conference report prior to the meeting and was angry that the House alteration of SB 2922 removed the teeth from a proposed abortion ban.

“The language in this bill basically says that this law will take effect when the United States Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade,” Holland said.

Nunnelee, shaken and furious, said the meeting was not begun in good faith.

“I sat in here for an hour and a half. After he set the appointment, he walks in 12 minutes before the deadline with a very complex piece of legislation. It’s only two sections, but they are two very important sections,” Nunnelee said.

Sections 5 and 6 were the bill killers for Nunnelee, because they stated that the abortion ban would kick in only when the Mississippi Attorney General “determines that the U.S. Supreme Court has overruled the decision of Roe v. Wade.”

Moak, a Public Health and Human Services Committee member, argued that the Legislature should not be in the job of second-guessing the Supreme Court, and said the dubious Sections 5 and 6 were added only after consultation with National Right to Life, a group formed to end abortion in the U.S.

A terse back and forth ensued between House and the Senate committee members.

“I’ve still got questions,” Nunnelee said.

“Well you’ve got five minutes to ask them,” Holland replied.

“I can’t help it if you show up 12 minutes before deadline,” Nunnelee said.

“Well, the process has been established since 1817,” Holland mumbled back.

Senate Public Health and Welfare committee member Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith, D-Brookhaven, was also outraged.

“When was this printed?” she demanded.

“About 45 minutes to an hour ago,” Holland said. “Look, you make it what you want to make it, OK? The House of Representatives … has given you a fair bill on abortion effective when Roe v. Wade is overturned. That’s a position that we will not retreat from, and we will not compromise.”

i don't recall anything i've read in months that made me feel happier than this article. I LOVE steve Holland and i LOVE watching these jackasses squirm over the fact he's stealing their pander point!

A quick thought on the Israeli Election.

All I want to say is that I'm glad former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu won't be leading that country into war like he's been dying to do. the only thing that stayed his hand in the 90s was an engaged American president. Regardless of my feelings about bush, i have no faith in his ability to encourage restraint in radical Israeli politicians...and the last thing we need in the middle east is netenyahu tossing a match into the haystack.

It has been revealed that on WEEK that the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Bush in the 2000 election, VP Dick Cheney contacted then Sec. of Defense Cohen. Cohen was reportedly shocked that the VP never wanted an overview of threats facing the nation or a review of any security matters.

All he wanted to know about was Iraq. This was January 2001. They walked in the door ready to cook the books. finally all the chickenhawks that were too afraid to fight in any war of their generation was ready to let someone else do their fighting for them.

Just last week President Bush said that he did not want to go to war in Iraq. more to the point, he said 'no president wants war'.

Damn! too bad they just verified that Bush had already set the invasion date prior to Colin Powell's trip to the UN or even the completion of the arms nispections (we're talking 1/03). Its now been shown that WMDs didn't matter since they were planning to go in regardless. the most shocking part? BUSH's own personal idea that they paint up a drone to look like a UN plane and fly it into Iraq for the purpose of being fired upon. THAT way they could claim an attack and just blast right in. What a lying bastard.

Watch this clip. It deals with the whole notion that the press coverage of Iraqi 'is all negative' and swaying public opinion. She even touches on a pet peeve of mine: all the right wingers in the press crying and moaning about negative Iraq coverage...just how many of THEM are doing these missing 'sunshine' stories. MORE to the point, just like the Chickenhawk politicians who never fear sending anyone ELSE to war, these right wing media chickenhawks SURE don't seem to interested in taking themselves over to Iraq to give us the 'real story'. Now think about this. 30 people were found be-headed in the last 24 hours in Iraq. where in the hell would that not lead in the news? OK, let me REALLY drive the point home here. just where in the world, peacetime or not, do we see pubic works projects and feel-good stories dominate the newscast? seriously. All these 'good stories' that the press somehow misses...just when has this sort of cover EVER existed in large measure...particularly in a war zone? If i hear one more person complain to me about the press coverage in Iraq, I'm gonna punch them. I'm sorry jackasses. Don't be surprised when Iraq doesn't suddenly become the first war zone/civil war dominated with stories about public works projects.

...AND ANOTHER THING!! don't be shocked that the reconstruction isn't being lauded when its been done so half assed and at SEVEN TIMES (and counting) the cost we were told it would be.

So now you know why they weren't too bothered about finding no WMDs. it wasn't about WMD. it wasn't about terrorism. It was about deposing a dictator and telling the public any lie that would let them do it. it was about WANTING to use our soldiers like toys and never bothering to deal with the effects. Repeatedly Bush said we could avert war if Saddam would just 'come clean' about the WMDs. That was a 2300 soldier, $350 billion (and counting) lie to get what he wanted. his chance to put on a soldier suit and play general. What's worse is that our nation will take years to rebuild the credibility this president squandered.

It's hard to imagine a lead sentence more perversely undemocratic than this, from Gina Holland of the Associated Press:

WASHINGTON -- His wartime powers undercut once before by the Supreme Court, President Bush could take a second hit in a case in which Osama bin Laden's former driver is seeking to head off a trial before military officers.

Oh, that meddlesome Supreme Court, always going about undercutting the wartime powers of our wartime president. Those whiny justices, always worrying about whether or not the executive branch's claims of unchecked, absolute power are constitutional. It's always "blah, blah, blah, rule of law, blah, blah, blah" with them.

If they keep this up, eventually they'll undercut everyone's power to break the law with impunity. And then where will we be?

Seriously, is this really how Gina Holland understands the role of the Constitution? As some kind of threat to the president's otherwise limitless power? This is the framework she presents. Read that again:

Are there no editors at the Associated Press who remember fourth-grade social studies?

President Bush's earlier claims to unlimited power were ruled -- with the definitive final say of the Supreme Court -- to be unconstitutional, illegitimate, nonexistent. He has no "powers" -- wartime or otherwise -- other than those granted to him by the Constitution.

Holland turns this on its head. She seems to think it is the courts' concerns about constitutionality and legality that are illegitimate. Not just illegitimate, but dangerous -- undercutting the president during wartime, after all, sounds like something that would weaken America.

If one accepts Holland's view then not only does the Constitution become irrelevant, but the Magna Carta starts to look a bit shaky.

I Watched this epic again today. you have to devote some time to it, but what a fulfilling movie. I often find myself wishing Alec Guinness was on the screen more since i love ever word he says in this film. knowing that much of the story is true to fact...it's a triumph.

SIDENOTE: in this film, all action that takes place 'on the way' in this journey moves from the left to the right of the screen.

My favorite scene? the first meeting with Prince Feisal in his tent.

Civil War

It's not just the old Iraqi Leaders saying Iraq has fallen into civil war. Our generals on the ground agree. Of course the president disagrees with this, which means one of two things (and i don't know which is the bigger problem)--Either the generals aren't being straight with the President or the President isn't being straight with us. OK, not everybody thinks Iraq is in a civil war. I think what makes a difference on how people see this is just what qualifies as a 'civil war' to the person talking. In the last week i've come to think there is a civil war going on now. we're seeing 50+ killed a day and almost that many kidnapped a day doesn't sound like peace.

The Bush administration said security clearances cannot be denied "solely on the basis of the sexual orientation of the individual." But it removed language saying sexual orientation "may not be used as a basis for or a disqualifying factor in determining a person's eligibility for a security clearance."

Of course it can be argued that a closeted homosexual can easily be blackmailed (and this has long been the real concern). Does this mean we should only clear the openly gay?

Feds are prosecuting Forrest County (MS) Sheriff Billy McGee for taking 2 FEMA ice trucks adn giving their contents to locals during the Katrina disaster. a national guardsman tried to stop him...she sheriff cuff'd him and went back to work.

McGee is a Democrat.

By "Fully Investigated," you mean "We're Lying"...Gotcha

The Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff claimed that when the United Arab Emirates wanted to take over 6 of our ports, they were fully investigated. Well, you know, by that he means...well...

They weren't.

The deal IS part of a free trade deal the White House (and its international business supporters) is working on right now. As you recall, there was some alarm over the idea of another Nation taking over the management of our Ports, particularly another nation with ties to 9/11, one the few nations that recognized Al Qa'ida, and one of the major conduits for funding to the Taliban.

Of course THEY don't need to be investigated for Terrorist ties. As you know, the president didn't even know about the deal until it was making a stink in the news. before investigating it himself, he announced that he'd veto any attempt to stop the deal. Now think about that. He's ready to drop the first Veto of his PRESIDENCY over a deal he didn't even KNOW ABOUT 24 hours beforehand.

Some have noted (particularly the president) that these ports were previously run by foreigners (the british). Now i'm gonna spare you the obvious differences between the UAE and the UK, but i'll point out something that many are glossing over: Its not that this company is run/owned by foreigners. its that it is an arm of the United Arab Emirates--the NATION itself. This isn't just handing the ports to another company, it's handing the ports to another COUNTRY.

With ties to terrorism.

Without one investigation to see if this is a problem.

The White House leaked some transcripts from daily FEMA conference calls to show how engaged the president was in the days after the storm hit. it was an attempt to offset his previous lack of interest before people started dying. Earlier this week on ABC's Nightline, Bush claimed he didn't realized Katrina Victims were suffering until he saw them on TV screaming.

I totally believe that.

Oh, and as for those transcripts...those were the ones the
White House has previously kept away from the Congressional Investigation into the matter. Its pretty bad when you have to use documents you hid in order to try to save your ass.

"We Are Fully Prepared"

The AP has film of Bush during the last Pre-Katrina meeting on Aug. 29. It shows a President and a White House that was fully aware of the dangers facing New Orleans. His comments were: "I don't think anybody anticipated the breach of the levees". The newly released tape shows them speaking in detail about what was to come and what they later claimed there was no way they could have expected. The AP has caught the president in a lie. red handed. on tape. this sort of negligent behavior is beyond irresponsible...perhaps criminal.

WASHINGTON - In dramatic and sometimes agonizing terms, federal disaster officials warned
President Bush and his homeland security chief before Hurricane Katrina struck that the storm could breach levees, put lives at risk in New Orleans' Superdome and overwhelm rescuers, according to confidential video footage.

Bush didn't ask a single question during the final briefing before Katrina struck on Aug. 29, but he assured soon-to-be-battered state officials: 'We are fully prepared.'

_Homeland Security officials have said the "fog of war" blinded them early on to the magnitude of the disaster. But the video and transcripts show federal and local officials discussed threats clearly, reviewed long-made plans and understood Katrina would wreak devastation of historic proportions. "I'm sure it will be the top 10 or 15 when all is said and done,"
National Hurricane Center's Max Mayfield warned the day Katrina lashed the Gulf Coast.

We are talking about a knowing disregard here. a betrayal of the most basic job of the President. At best he was asleep at the wheel. AT BEST.

Know who looks best on the video? Ex-FEMA chief Brown.

"We're going to need everything that we can possibly muster, not only in this state and in the region, but the nation, to respond to this event," Brown warned. He called the storm "a bad one, a big one" and implored federal agencies to cut through red tape to help people, bending rules if necessary.

"Go ahead and do it," Brown said. "I'll figure out some way to justify it. ... Just let them yell at me."

If they KNEW the Southern states were about to be hit with, perhaps, the nations greatest natural disaster of all time...and didn't have one question...well, I have to ask: Who's really in charge here? Because Jr. seems to be play acting President. how can the man truly leading this nation sit there in this briefing, before this disaster and have not ONE question? not ONE comment?
